General Polo FAQs

Where does the royal family play polo?

The British royal family often plays polo at prestigious clubs such as:

  • Guards Polo Club (Windsor Great Park)

  • Beaufort Polo Club (Gloucestershire)
These clubs host elite tournaments and have strong royal associations.

How is polo played?

Polo is a team sport played on horseback. Each team has four players aiming to hit a small ball into the opposing team’s goal using a long-handled mallet. Matches are divided into periods called chukkers.

What does ‘chukker’ mean in polo?

A chukker (or chukka) is a 7-minute period of play. Most matches consist of 4 to 6 chukkers, depending on the tournament rules.

What is the offside rule in polo?

Unlike in football, polo doesn’t have a traditional offside rule. Instead, it uses the concept of the “line of the ball”, which determines right of way, ensuring safety and fair play.

What is the 3-man offside rule?

This is a historic rule used in earlier forms of polo. Today, it’s largely obsolete. Instead, modern polo emphasizes right of way based on the ball’s line, speed, and position of the horses.

What are the three basic rules of polo?

  1. Right of Way: The player following the ball’s line has priority.

  2. Line of the Ball: An invisible line extended through the ball’s direction of travel; players must not cross dangerously.

  3. Safety First: Any play that could endanger a horse or player is penalized.
