The Ceremony of the Keys Private Tour
Step into the timeless tradition the Ceremony of the Keys, a nightly ritual dating back over 700 years that involves the symbolic locking up of the Tower of London. Nestled within the imposing battlements of this ancient fortress, this ceremony is both historic and vibrant, having endured unchanged for centuries.
The true magic unfolds as the sun sets, and the public visitors bid farewell for the day. Now, the Tower belongs solely to the Yeoman Warders and the ever-watchful ravens.
Embark on an exclusive hour-long external tour guided by a Yeoman Warder, whose unique tales bring the Tower’s history to life. From ancient secrets to modern-day anecdotes (ever tried ordering pizza delivery when your address is The Tower of London?), these custodians share a perspective few others can.
As the evening draws in, participants of the Ceremony of the Keys tour are privy to a moment in history that remains largely unseen by the wider public. This exclusive event not only provides an insight into the ceremonial aspect of the Tower’s daily life but also offers a unique, intimate experience of one of Britain’s most iconic landmarks.
The Ceremony of the Keys private tour presents an unparalleled opportunity to witness the traditional locking up of the Tower, an event steeped in ritual and significance. Guests on this tour are taken on a journey through time, where they can immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of British history and explore the Tower’s role in safeguarding the nation’s treasures.
In addition to witnessing the ceremony itself, guests will learn about the Tower’s architecture, its inhabitants, and its place in British history from the knowledgeable Yeoman Warders. These Beefeaters, as they are affectionately known, are not just guides but are custodians of the Tower, with their roles dating back to the Tudor period.
Moreover, the Ceremony of the Keys tour allows guests to experience the Tower of London in a different light—quite literally. As darkness envelopes the fortress, the Tower’s atmosphere transforms, offering a serene and somewhat eerie experience that contrasts sharply with the daytime hustle and bustle.
The tour also delves into lesser-known stories and legends associated with the Tower, from tales of intrigue and imprisonment to those of courage and loyalty. Guests will discover the importance of the ravens, the Tower’s most famous avian residents, and learn why their presence is considered essential for the kingdom’s survival.
For history enthusiasts and curious minds alike, the Ceremony of the Keys tour is an unforgettable experience, providing not just a glimpse into the past, but a deeper understanding of the traditions that shape Britain’s identity today.
